On January 19, Minister of Economy Shahin Mustafayev met with the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Ghulam Ishaqzai. The meeting discussed the implementation of the UN-Azerbaijan Partnership Framework Document, cooperation with the Secretariat of the National Coordinating Council for sustainable development, and the next steps to be taken in these areas.
Then, the first meeting of the Management Committee of the UN-Azerbaijan Partnership Framework Document (UNAPF) was held under the organization of the Ministry of Economy and the UN Mission in Azerbaijan.
It should be noted that the Ministry of Economy is the coordinator of the Azerbaijan government on the UN-Azerbaijan Partnership Framework Document.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister of Economy Shahin Mustafayev noted that as a result of the successful socio-economic policy implemented by the head of state, dynamic development has been achieved in Azerbaijan, and a competitive and export-oriented economy has been formed. In order to further develop entrepreneurship in order to ensure the sustainable development of the economy, the inspections conducted in this area were suspended for 2 years, the issuance of licenses was simplified, industrial parks and zones were created to create new production and workplaces, the issuance of incentive documents for the improvement of the investment environment was started, customs reforms continued, special export missions were organized, and measures were taken to strengthen the social protection of the population. As a result of the poverty reduction programs, the poverty rate decreased from 49% in 2001 to 4.9% in 2015. Azerbaijan was awarded a special award by the Food and Agriculture Organization for its achievements in this field and is one of the 18 countries among 128 countries in the world that have achieved the goal of reducing malnutrition. The election of Azerbaijan as a member of the prestigious UN Economic and Social Council for the years 2017-2019 with a large majority of votes is an indication of the high appreciation given at the international level to the achievements of our country in the socio-economic field in the last decade.
Minister Shahin Mustafayev, who gave information about the cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, said that the relations are at a high level, that Azerbaijan has joined many initiatives and programs of the UN, the Millennium Development Goals, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He emphasized that he was elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
However, UN-Azerbaijan relations entered a new stage with the United Nations-Azerbaijan Partnership Framework Document for 2016-2020, signed last year. During the preparation of the document, national partners, international partners on development issues, the private sector, civil society and the scientific community discussions on defining strategic areas were held with representatives and UNAPF was based on the goals expressed in the "Azerbaijan-2020: vision of the future" Development Concept and other documents approved by President Ilham Aliyev in 2012. In the Sustainable Development Goals and UNAPF, sustainable development, diversification of the economy, expansion of employment opportunities for vulnerable groups of the population, accessibility of quality public and social services for all, achieving more inclusive and equal development from a social point of view, improvement of legislation, as well as management of the environment and natural resources, energy efficiency, resilience to risk and natural disasters, etc. issues have been reflected. Minister Shahin Mustafayev emphasized that the implementation of the UN-Azerbaijan Partnership Framework Document will contribute to the comprehensive and sustainable development of our country and joint activities with international organizations.
Ghulam Ishaqzai, the resident coordinator of the UN in Azerbaijan, noted the effective cooperation of Azerbaijan with the UN and the institutions of this prestigious organization, and informed about the tasks arising from the document.
