Azerbaijan and SDGs: Historical background

  • The establishment of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) was approved in 2012 by the final document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) entitled "The Future We Want". The format and organizational aspects of the forum are reflected in the resolution of the General Assembly No. 67/290.

  • The Forum meets annually for eight days under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (including a three-day ministerial segment) and every four years under the auspices of the General Assembly for two days at the level of heads of state and government.

  • The first meeting of the forum was held on September 24, 2013. It replaced the Commission on Sustainable Development, which met annually since 1993.

  • HLPF is the main platform of the United Nations on sustainable development and it has a central role in the global monitoring and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Forum facilitates the exchange of experiences, successes, challenges and lessons learned and provides political leadership, guidance and recommendations.

  • Our republic joined the SDGs approved for 2016-2030 at the Sustainable Development Summit of UN member states held on September 25-27, 2015;

Since joining the SDGs, Azerbaijan was the first in the region and one of the 10 countries in the world to submit a Voluntary National Review (VNR) to the UN High-Level Political Forum 3 times (in 2017, 2019, 2021) regarding the work done in the direction of the implementation of the SDGs)
