On June 12, the 2nd meeting of the high-level Steering Committee regarding the Partnership Framework document between the United Nations (UN) and Azerbaijan was held.
It should be noted that the Ministry of Economy is the coordinator of the Azerbaijan government on the UN-Azerbaijan Partnership Framework Document.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Economy Sevinj Hasanova noted that Azerbaijan has been effectively cooperating with specialized agencies of the organization since becoming a member of the UN in 1992, and in this context, a number of important documents were signed and measures were implemented. It was emphasized that in 2011, Azerbaijan was elected a non-permanent member of the Security Council, the highest body of the UN, for a 2-year term. As a country joining the UN Millennium Declaration, Azerbaijan has implemented targeted programs and comprehensive measures in the field of fighting poverty. As a result, the poverty level in Azerbaijan decreased from 49% in 2001 to 4.9% in 2015. Azerbaijan was awarded the "South-South" award of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization for its achievements in the fight against poverty and is one of 18 countries among 128 countries that have achieved the goal of reducing malnutrition. In addition, the State Agency for Service to Citizens and Social Innovations under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan won the UN nomination "Improving public services" for its success in increasing the efficiency and transparency of public services to citizens.
The Deputy Minister noted that UN-Azerbaijan relations have entered a new stage with the United Nations-Azerbaijan Partnership Framework Document (UNAPF) for the period 2016-2020, signed in July 2016, and the national priorities set in the Development Concept "Azerbaijan 2020: A Vision of the Future" of the document. pointed out that it was adapted and built on the Agenda for Sustainable Development until 2030 and the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was reported that cooperation with the UN on SDGs and targeted cooperation on the country's priorities within the framework of UNAPF will be continued.
Ghulam M. Ishaqzai, the resident coordinator of the UN in Azerbaijan, said that the event contributed to the determination of the main priorities of UNAPF, as well as strategic results, sustainable development goals arising from the "Transformation of our world: Agenda 2030" sustainable socio-economic growth and improvement of living standards. noted its special importance in the direction. Ghulam M. Ishaqzai also drew attention to the achievements achieved through the projects on expanding the powers of women, supporting vulnerable groups, improving reproductive health and health services, increasing skills for sustainable development, reducing the risk of natural disasters and climate change, in the direction of the implementation of the framework document.
At the meeting, presentations of the working groups on the United Nations - Azerbaijan Partnership Framework Document were held, the achievements to be achieved within the framework of the projects to be implemented in three priority strategic areas in 2018 and the measures planned for this year were brought to attention, the contributions of the Steering Committee to this area were emphasized.
At the end of the event, the Joint Work Plans for 2018 were approved by the Steering Committee for all 3 directions of the Framework Document, and it was decided to prepare an Interim Report.
